Below we have some answers to the most asked questions about the COVID-19 vaccine, answered by Dr. Sang Dao!

1) Should I get the COVID-19 vaccine?

Yes, I encourage anybody who is eligible to get the vaccine, to go ahead and get vaccinated as soon as possible. There are major benefits of getting the vaccine. The vaccine prevents you from contracting the infection and it is shown to be very effective at doing this. And in case that you do catch the infection, the vaccine keeps you from getting seriously ill. More importantly, getting the vaccine protects the people around you, particularly people who are at high risk of developing severe complications from COVID-19.

2) Will the COVID-19 vaccine give me COVID-19?

No. None of the available COVID-19 vaccines contain the live virus. So, these vaccines will not give you COVID-19.

3) If I’ve already had COVID-19 do I need to get the vaccine?

Yes. If you were infected with COVID-19, you may have developed some immunity to it. However, we still do not know exactly how long this immunity will last.

4) Is the COVID-19 vaccine safe?

Yes – all the vaccines available are safe and effective. These vaccines have met the FDA’s meticulous standards for safety, efficacy, and quality. You may experience mild side effects after the inoculation such as pain/swelling at the injection site, headache, chills, and/or low-grade fever. Severe allergic reaction, or anaphylaxis, after vaccination is extremely rare. As such, after you receive the vaccine, you will be asked to be observed by a healthcare provider for 10-15 minutes in case you develop a severe allergic reaction and need treatment immediately.

5) Should my children get the COVID-19 vaccine?

Anyone ages 16 and older may be vaccinated at this time. There has been little research on the efficacy and safety of the vaccines in children, but researchers are looking into that.

6) If I’m pregnant or trying to get pregnant, should I get the COVID-19 vaccine?

There has not been much research on the efficacy and safety of the vaccine in pregnancy. I would encourage patients to have a conversation with their clinicians to decide whether the vaccine is right for them.

7) Does the COVID-19 vaccine impact fertility?

There is no evidence to suggest that the COVID-19 vaccine has any impact on fertility.
