COVID-19 and Water Activities

Warmer days are becoming more frequent. Many of us are now dreaming of strolling beaches, jumping into pools, or taking kids to play at splash playgrounds. But with COVID-19’s presence, it’s natural to wonder how safe those places are. According to the CDC, these water adjacent spaces aren’t singularly dangerous, with a few easy considerations.

  1. Stay home if you are sick or could become sick due to an exposure.
  2. Continue social distancing. Masks should be worn if you are closer than 6 feet from people.
  3. If your mask will be saturated with water, do not wear it as it can be hazardous. Move to a place you can stay further apart from others.
  4. It is best to keep water sources away from your nose and mouth. Public pools, hot tubs, and water playgrounds should be disinfecting the water which should inactivate the virus. The CDC is not aware of any scientific reports of the virus that causes COVID-19 spreading to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, or water playgrounds.
  5. Choose outdoor venues instead of indoor ones.
  6. Continue being mindful of hand hygiene. Wash or otherwise sanitize your hands often.
